Poetry by Charles Moffat

Poetry is Magic

In Japan there is a story of a Zen monk
Who when being attacked by a villain
The monk spoke a few lines of Zen Poetry
The villain threw down his weapon and ran away

Now its not magic in the traditional sense
And certainly not in the fantastical sense either
But that doesn't mean it can't perform magic
Poetry can move minds in ways other things cannot

Poetry seduces the mind, enchants it
Set to music and to rhyme, poetry is powerful
So powerful it can enrapt millions in a speech
Entrance a lover to lust with mere words

We know that magic has been mythologized
That people saw technology, thinking it was occult
Thus it was when mere poetry performed miracles
People saw magic words that spoke directly to their mind
